GFL Environmental (TSX:GFL) and OPAL Fuels (NDAQ:OPAL) have recently commenced commercial operations at their renewable natural gas facility situated at GFL’s Sampson County Landfill in Roseboro, North Carolina. This facility, when operating at full capacity, will produce sufficient gas to facilitate zero Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions from over 900 heavy-duty trucks.
GFL Environmental, known as the fourth-largest diversified environmental services company in North America, has partnered with OPAL Fuels, a prominent player in capturing and converting biogas into low-carbon renewable natural gas and renewable electricity, to establish and operate this facility.
Under the joint venture named Paragon RNG, the companies aim to upscale production at the facility and replicate similar projects across other landfills owned by GFL. OPAL Fuels will oversee day-to-day operations and supply RNG to GFL’s fleet and other transportation clients.
This initiative comes after the successful construction of their first facility, Emerald RNG, in June 2023 at GFL’s Arbor Hills landfill in Michigan.
